Emma saw the anger and determination flood into Carly’s body. It wasn’t just for the idiot causing the trouble either. If she didn’t miss her guess, a good portion of that anger had Garrett’s name on it. When her friend turned to face him, Emma knew she’d been right.

“You knew this?” Carly said poking at Garrett’s chest. “You knew my brother was in danger and your first instinct was to keep me in the dark? To pat me on the head like a good little girl and lock me in a safe place? Are you insane? Didn’t New York teach you anything? Haven’t you learned anything about me in the past few years? Who gave you the right to decide what I should and should not be privy to when it comes to family? Well I won’t stand for it. I thought by now you knew I understand the confidential nature of your business. However, when the trouble takes a more personal turn, you had damned well better start reading me in, buster.”

Chewing on her lip to keep from shouting her support like a cheerleader, Emma watched Garrett reach out to his wife. Unfortunately, his wife was having none of it.

“Don’t you dare try to --”

“I was trying to explain,” Garrett said shoving his hands in his pockets.

Emma knew they didn’t have time for the maelstrom that was building between these two very emotional people.

“Time out, you two. Yes, Carly, I agree they should have been a bit more forthcoming. However, I’m as guilty as they are this time. I keep forgetting about your experience in New York. I can tell you, none of us understood how everything was connected, or that William was in trouble until now.” Carly nodded and Emma turned to face Garrett. “A head’s up for the future. Touching or holding us when what we need is an explanation makes us believe you think we’re too stupid to understand. That’s not the best way to defend your case.

“All that said,” she turned to include everyone, “We need to come up with a plan. It sounds to me as if William is still local or at least still in Colorado because they’re trying to round us all up into the same place. For some reason, they want everyone at the Clandestine offices. Part of that reason may be that they think the bar is gone by now or they know most of us involved work there.”

When Artemis nodded, Emma knew she was on the right track so she continued.

“It could also mean that David is still in New York and this is Radick’s game, though Artemis didn’t have anything to do with his problem.”

Eric shook his head. “David is on his way here. I had my boss check the airports with facial recognition to see if he left New York before we boarded. They started from the day he escaped through today. I was notified during the flight that he boarded a flight an hour after we left.
